17 In many respects, the Baltic connection is an outstanding location factor for West Mecklenburg. More than 100 million people live in the Baltic region, making it economically interesting as a trading area with a long history. As logistics hubs, the Baltic ports represent an important international economic factor. The quality of life associated with the sea attracts around 6,500 young students to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern every year. Attractive jobs ensure that a large number of graduates, as well as the more than 13,000 school graduates each year, remain in the state. Commuters, who have to leave the region every day to reach their workplace, and returnees, who are drawn back to their old home, both form another large potential pool of skilled workers. In addition, the white Baltic beaches act as magnets for thousands of visitors every year. The well over 100 kilometres of beach in the district of Nordwestmecklenburg alone attract Baltic lovers in particular to the 37 square kilometre island of Poel and to the traditional Baltic resort of Boltenhagen.
