45 Mecklenburg-Vorpommern looks back on a long agricultural tradition. Since reunification, companies in the food industry in particular have increasingly settled along the well-developed infrastructure axes and have become an important industrial economic factor. The natural resources found in West Mecklenburg can thus be used profitably. Agriculture provides valuable raw materials for modern food products. The industrial processing of these raw materials into finished foodstuffs increases the depth of production. A total of about 17,000 people are employed in the food industry in MecklenburgVorpommern. The companies in this sector generate a turnover volume of around 5 billion euros. The share of the food industry in the total turnover of the manufacturing industry is about 33 per cent. Within the manufacturing industry, the food industry is therefore the largest industrial sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, both in terms of the number of employees and in terms of turnover, and has been recording continuous growth for years.
