7 With an area of 4,751 square kilometres, the district of LudwigslustParchim is the second largest district in Germany and forms the southern part of West Mecklenburg. It is geographically characterised by its location on the Hamburg-Berlin axis. A large catchment area within quick reach via the A24 and A14 motorways as well as via the ICE line between the two metropolises, which stops in Ludwigslust. The economic landscape is dominated by companies from manufacturing industry, especially from the food sector, but also the logistics industry is strong. The district is fully committed to renewable energy and plans to establish green industrial estates. The existing pipeline infrastructure also provides the basis for the future technology of hydrogen. The district is also an area of outstanding natural beauty, with its two Schaalsee and Flusslandschaft Elbe UNESCO biosphere reserves along the former inner-German border as well as the region around the Plauer See Lake, the western gateway to the Mecklenburg Lake District, standing out in particular.
